Jimmy's Biography
Saxophonist Jimmy Rainey was born in Ōtautahi, Aotearoa (Christchurch, New Zealand), where he currently lives. He is a talented musician and creative, and is establishing a varied career as a performer, composer and arranger in New Zealand as well as in Europe.Jimmy has completed study at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam (2017-2019) in The Netherlands, where he studied with Ben van Gelder, Dick Oatts, Simon Rigter and members of the Metropole Orkest. He also holds a bachelors degree from the Ara Music Arts programme in Christchurch (2013-2015).Jimmy has performed at a variety of venues and festivals around Europe and Aotearoa, including Paradiso, Bimhuis, Zwarte Cross, Amsterdam Open Air, and all the major NZ Jazz festivals. He has worked and performed with Scribe & P-Money, 2XM, Vallé, Tami Neilson and the Jong Metropole Orkest. His own projects include Yurt Party, Harmony & Rhythm, and Excellent Boys.Jimmy is excited to be based in Christchurch again, and is looking forward to building the original and improvised music scene with music collective 03 Sessions.
